Frederic Chopin (1810-1849) was born near Warsaw, Poland, to a French father and a Polish mother. He spent most of his adult life in the city of Paris, where his livelihood came primarly from teaching the piano. He was as extraodinarily gifted as a pianist as he was a composer, but his public performances were rare; he suffered terribly from concert nerves and much preferred the more informal atmosphere of the numerous private salons of fashionable Paris society where he frequently performed in the evenings. A recollection from the composer Berlioz vividly calls to mind the unique nature of these informal Parisian soirees: “A small circle of select auditors, whose real desire to hear him was beyond doubt, could alone determine him to approach the piano. What emotions he would then call forth! In what ardent and melancholy reveries he loved to pour out his soul! It was usually towards midnight that he gave himself up with the greatest abandon.” Uniquely, Chopin wrote almost entirely for the piano, and in various musical forms - Preludes, Ballades, Scherzos, Mazurkas, etc. - which he made very much his own.
